هَدَى اللهُ مَعْشُوقَ الجَمَالِ إِلَى الهُدَى
May Allah Guide the Beloved of Beauty to Guidance

هَدَى اللهُ مَعْشُوقَ الْجَمَالِ إِلَى الْهُدَى
وَجَنَّبَهُ مَا يَخْتَشِيهِ مِنَ الْرَّدَى
hada Allahu maʿshūqal jamāli ilal hudā
wajannabahu mā yakhtashīhi minal rradā
May Allah guide the Beloved of Beauty to true guidance,
and protect him from the ruin that he fears
وَنَفْسَ حَسُودٍ أَسْخَنَ اللّهُ عَيْنَهُ
وَأَسْهَرَهُ حَتَّى يَبِيتَ مُسَهَّدَا
wanafsa ḥasūdin askhana Allahu ʿaynahu
wa asharahu ḥattā yabīta musahhadā
And the soul of the envier, may God make his eyes burn with sorrow,
and keep him awake until he passes the night in sleeplessness
وَلَا بَرِحَتْ تُهْدِي لَنَا ظَبْيَةُ الْحِمَى
مِنَ الْمِسْكِ وَالْكَافُورِ فِي غَفْلَةِ الْعِدَا
walā bariḥat tuhdī lanā ẓabyatul ḥimā
minal miski wal kāfūri fī ghaflatil ʿidā
May the gazelle of the sanctuary never cease to gift us,
musk and camphor while the enemies remain heedless
أُحِبُّ لَهَا دَمُّونَ وَالْنَّجْدَ وَالْرُّبَا
وَ خَيْلَةَ وَالْشِّعْبَ الَّذِي نُورُهُ بَدَا
uḥibbu lahā dammūna wal nnajda wal rrubā
wa khaylata wal shshiʿbal ladhī nūruhu badā
For her sake, I love Dammun, the Najd, and the hills,
and Khaylah and the mountain pass where his light appeared
مُحَجَّبَةٌ مِنْ هَاشِمٍ وَمُحَمَّدٍ
عَلَيْهِ صَلَاةُ اللّهْ دَأْبًا وَسَرْمَدَا
muḥajjabatun min hāshimin wamuḥammadin
ʿalayhi ṣalātu Allah da’ban wasarmadā
A veiled lady from the line of Hashim and Muhammad,
upon him be the blessings of God, unceasing and everlasting
فَلَا تَعْذُلُونِي فِي الْمَلِيحَةِ وَاعْذُرُوا
فَقَلْبِي بِهَا يُمْسِي عَلَيْهَا كَمَا غَدَا
falā taʿdhulūnī fīl malīḥati waʿ dhurū
faqalbī bihā yumsī ʿalayhā kamā ghadā
So do not reproach me regarding the beautiful one, but excuse me,
for my heart is with her in the evening as it is in the morning
فَيَا أَيُّهَا الْعُذَّالُ رِفْقًا وَرَحْمَةً
بِصَبٍّ كَئِيبٍ عَيْشُهُ قَدْ تَنَكَّدَا
fayā ayyuhal ʿudhdhālu rifqan waraḥmatan
biṣabbin ka’ībin ʿayshuhu qad tanakkadā
O censurers, show gentleness and mercy,
to an afflicted lover whose life has become wretched
وَلَا تَتَوَهَّمْ ظَبْيَةَ الْحَيِّ أَنَّنِي
صَبَوتُ مَعَاذَ اللّهْ وَالْحَادِ قَدْ حَدَا
walā tatawahham ẓabyatal ḥayyi annanī
ṣabawtu maʿādha Allah wal ḥādi qad ḥadā
And do not imagine, O gazelle of the tribe, that I,
have succumbed to folly, God forbid, while the camel-driver has sung his song
وَسَاقَ نِيَاقَ الْشَّوْقِ يَقْصِدُ مَعْهَدًا
بِهِ نَزَلَ الْأَقْوَامُ فِي رَوْضَةِ الْنَّدَى
wasāqa niyāqal shshawqi yaqṣidu maʿhadan
bihi nazalal aqwāmu fī rawḍatil nnadā
Driving the camels of longing, heading toward a sanctuary,
where the people have settled in a garden of dew
بِعَِيْدِيدَ حَيَّ اللّهُ عَيْدِيْدَ كُلَّهُ
بِسَارِيَةٍ مَهْمَا شَرَى الْبَرْقُ أَرْ عَدَا
biʿiaydīda ḥayya Allahu ʿaydiyda kullahu
bisāriyatin mahmā sharal barqu ar ʿadā
At ʿAydīd, may Allah preserve all of ʿAydīd,
With a passing rain-cloud, whenever lightning flashes or thunder rolls
وَجَازَ الْرِّيَاضَ الْخُضْرَ مِنْ وَادِي الْنَّقَا
بِزَنْبَلَ مِنْ بَشَّارْ مَا قُمَرِيٌ شَدَا
wajāzal rriyāḍal khuḍra min wādīl nnaqā
bizanbala min bashshār mā qumariyun shadā
May it pass over the green meadows of Wadi al-Naqa,
To Zanbal and Bashar, as long as a turtledove sings
وَعَمَّ الْفُرَيْطَ الْنُّورُ مَعْ أَهْلِ بَكْدَرٍ
هَوَاطِلُ غُفْرَانٍ مَعَ الْأَمْنِ مِنْ رَدَى
waʿammal furayṭal nnūru maʿ ahli bakdarin
hawāṭilu ghufrānin maʿal amni min radā
And may light envelop al-Furayt and the people of Bakdar,
With downpours of forgiveness and safety from ruin
فَكَمْ ضَمْنَ هَاتِيكَ الْمَقَابِرِ عَارِفٌ
وَحَبْرٌ بِهِ فِي ظُلْمَةِ الْجَهْلِ يُهْتَدَى
fakam ḍamna hātīkal maqābiri ʿārifun
waḥabrun bihi fī ẓulmatil jahli yuhtadā
For how many a Gnostic is contained within those graveyards?
And how many a great scholar, through whom one is guided in the darkness of ignorance?
بِعَيْدِيدَ عَادَتْ كُلُّ عِيدٍ أَنِيسَةٍ
مَعَ الْجِيرةِ الْغَادِينَ مِن مَعْشَرِ الْهُدَى
biʿaydīda ʿādat kullu ʿīdin anīsatin
maʿal jīrtil ghādīna min maʿsharil hudā
In ‘Aydid, every festival has become a source of intimacy,
With the neighbors who travel there, those folk of true guidance
أَئِمَّةِ دِينِ اللَّهِ يَدْعُونَ خَلْقَهُ
إِلَى بَابِهِ طُوبَى لِمَنْ سَمِعَ الْنِّدَا
a’immati dīnillāhi yadʿūna khalqahu
ilā bābihi ṭūbā liman samiʿal nnidā
the Imams of Allah’s religion, calling His creation,
To His door; blessed is the one who hears that call!
وَسَارَ إِلَى الْرَّبِّ الْعَظِيمِ مُبَادِراً
لِطَاعَتِهِ يَرْجُو الْنَّعِيمَ الْمُخَلَّدَا
wasāra ilal rrabbil ʿaẓīmi mubādiran
liṭāʿatihi yarjūl nnaʿīmal mukhalladā
And hasten towards the Magnificent Lord,
in His obedience, seeking eternal bliss
وَيَخْشَى عَذَابَ اللّهْ فِي نَارِهِ الَّتِي
يُخَلَّدُ فِيهَا مَنْ طَغَى وَتَمَرَّدَا
wayakhshā ʿadhāba Allah fī nārihil latī
yukhalladu fīhā man ṭaghā watamarradā
Fearing the punishment of God in His fire,
Where those who were tyrannical and rebellious shall dwell forever
وَلَمْ يَتَّبِعْ خَيْرَ الْأَنَامِ مُحَمَّداً
نَبِيَّ الْهُدَى بَحْرَ الْنَّدَى مُجْلِيَ الْصَّدَا
walam yattabiʿ khayral anāmi muḥammadan
nabiyyal hudā baḥral nnadā mujliyal ṣṣadā
Those who did not follow the Best of Mankind, Muhammad,
The Prophet of Guidance, the Ocean of Generosity, the Dispeller of rust [from the heart]
عَلَيْهِ صَلَاةُ اللّهِ ثُمَّ سَلَامُهُ
صَلَاةً وَتَسْلِيمًا إِلَى آخِرِ الْمَدَى
ʿalayhi ṣalātu Allahi thumma salāmuhu
ṣalātan wataslīman ilā ākhiril madā
Upon him be Allah’s Blessings, then His peace,
A Blessing and Peace until the end of time
