Upon the ‘Aqiq we gathered
En
ʿalal ʿaqīqij tamaʿnā
naḥnu wasūdul ʿuyūni
By the valley of al-Aqiq we gathered,
we and the dark-eyed ones
mā ẓanni majnūna laylā
qad junna baʿḍal junūni
What do you think of Layla's Madman?
He suffered but a fraction of this madness
fayā ʿuyūnī ʿayawnī
wayā jufūnī jafawnī
O my eyes, how they have wearied me,
And O my eyelids, how they have forsaken me
wayā qulaybī taṣabbar
ʿalal ladhī fāraqūnī
O my little heart, remain patient,
Over those who parted from me
fāraqtuhum yawmal ithnayni
ṣubḥath thalāthā wāḥishūnī
I parted from them on Monday,
By Tuesday morning, I was desolate without them
hum sādatun khallafūnī
abkī daman min ʿuyūnī
They are noble masters who left me behind,
weeping tears of blood from my eyes
bakaytu ḥattā rathānī
alṭṭayru fawqal ghuṣūni
I wept until even the birds,
Upon the branches pitied me
billāhi in muttu shawqan
bi admuʿī ghassilūnī
By Allah, if I die of longing,
Wash me with my own tears
nūḥū ʿalayya waqūlū
hadhā qatīlul ʿuyūni
Wail over me and say,
“Here lies one slain by those eyes.”
mā ziltu ḥawlal maṭāyā
aqūlu billāhiḥ milūnī
Still I lingered around the riding mounts,
Pleading, “By Allah, carry me
ilā manāzili qawmī
sārū wamā waddaʿūnī
To the dwellings of my people!”
They departed without bidding me farewell
rūḥ yā rasūlī ilayhim
sirʿan waqabbil yadayhim
Go, O my messenger, to them,
Hasten, and kiss their hands
waq ra’ salāmī ʿalayhim
laʿallahum yaqbalūnī
Convey my greetings to them,
Perhaps they will accept me
jānīl rrasūl wahuwa yaḍḥak
waqāla abshir biṣulḥik
My messenger came to me smiling,
And said, “Rejoice, for reconciliation is yours!
waḥayāti ʿayshika wamilḥik
hum bil wiṣāli wāʿadūnī
The bond of bread and salt between you remains,
They have promised me that you shall be reunited with them
