جَمِّلْ أَحْوَالَنَا وَ ارْحَمْ وَ لَاتَمْتَحِنَّا
Beautify Our Condition, Have Mercy on Us, and Do Not Test Us

جَمِّلْ أَحْوَالَنَا وَارْحَمْ وَلَاتَمْتَحِنَّا
Allah Allah ya Allah Allah Allah ya Allah
jammil aḥwālanā war ḥam walātamtaḥinnā
Allah, Allah, O Allah! Allah, Allah, O Allah!
Beautify our states, have mercy on us, and try us not.
يَا أَكْحَلَ العَيْنْ حَيِّ الدَّانْ لَيْلَةْ سَمَرْنَا
نَكِّشِ الدَّانْ مِنْ مَغْنَى سُلَيْمَا أَلِفْ مَعْنَى
yā akḥalal ʿayn ḥayyid dān laylah samarnā
nakkishid dān min maghnā sulaymā alif maʿnā
O thou of dark-lidded eyes, revive the melody on our night of discourse
Unveil from the song of Sulayma’s abode a thousand meanings.
مِنْ سَنَا البَرْقْ لِيْ لَألَأْ عَلَى طُورِ سِينَاءْ
يَوْمْ مُوسَى اقْتَبَسْ مِنُّهْ وَ نَحْنُ اصْطَلَيْنَا
min sanal barq liy laāla’ ʿalā ṭūri sīnā’
yawm mūsāq tabas minnuh wa naḥnuṣ ṭalaynā
From the radiance of the lightning that shimmered upon Mount Sinai
On the day Moses sought a spark from it, while we were warmed by its fire.
مَنْ نَظَرْ مِنْهُ بَرْقَةْ صَاحْ مِنْهَا وَ أَنَّا
مَنْ سَمِعْ أَنَّةَ المَحْزُونْ تَخْشَاهْ يَفْنَى
man naẓar minhu barqah ṣāḥ minhā wa annā
man samiʿ annatal maḥzūn takhshāh yafnā
Whosoever beheld a flash of it cried out and moaned
Whosoever hears the moan of the sorrowful, fear that he might vanish in ecstasy.
يَا الله اِرْحَمْهُ وَانْظُرْ لُهْ فَإِنُّهْ مُعَنَّى
مِثِلْ ذُولَاكْ لِي ذَاقُوهْ مِن قَبِلْ كُنَّا
ya Allah irḥamhu wan ẓur luh fa innuh muʿannā
mithil dhūlāk lī dhāqūh min qabil kunnā
O Allah, have mercy on him and look upon him, for he is worn by love
Like those who tasted of it before we ever existed.
أَهِلْ حَضْرَتِهْ لِي مِنْ شُرْبِهِمْ قَدْ شَرِبْنَا
وَالَّذِي عَاصَرُونَا مَا دَرُوا إِيشْ مَعْنَا
ahil ḥaḍratih lī min shurbihim qad sharibnā
wal ladhī ʿāṣarūnā mā darū īsh maʿnā
The folk of His presence, of whose wine we have drunk
While those who lived in our time knew not our meaning.
مِن شَرَابِ المَحَبَّةْ وَ الصَّفَا لِي شَرِبْنَا
وَاصْطَبَحْنَا مِنْ أَقْدَاحِ الهَوَى وَاغْتَبَقْنَا
min sharābil maḥabbah waṣ ṣafā lī sharibnā
waṣ ṭabaḥnā min aqdāḥil hawā wagh tabaqnā
From the wine of love and purity we have drunk
We took the morning draught from the cups of passion, and the evening draught too.
كُلُّ مَنْ كَانْ يُنْكِرْ ذَا يَجِي يَسْتَمِعْنَا
يَسْتَمِعْ فَضْلَنَا نَصَّ الكِتَابِ المُبِينَا
kullu man kan yunkir dhā yajī yastamiʿnā
yastamiʿ faḍlanā naṣṣal kitābil mubīnā
Let every denier of this come and listen to us
Let him hear our virtue, the clear text of the Manifest Book.
أَهْلُ بَيْتِ النَّبِيّ أَهْلُ الوَفَا وَاليَقِينَا
هُمْ هُمْ أَهْلُ الكِسَاءْ يَا الله بِهِمْ جُدْ عَلَيْنَا
ahlu baytin nabiyy ahlul wafā wal yaqīnā
hum hum ahlul kisā’ ya Allah bihim jud ʿalaynā
The Prophet's family, the people of loyalty and certainty
They are the People of the Cloak, O Allah, by them bestow Your bounty upon us.
هُمْ هُمْ أَهْلُ الكِسَاءْ يَا الله بِهِمْ جُدْ عَلَيْنَا
بالعَوَافِي فِي الدَّارَيْنْ وَالكُلُّ مِنَّا
hum hum ahlul kisā’ ya Allah bihim jud ʿalaynā
bālʿawāfī fīd dārayn wal kullu minnā
They are the People of the Cloak, O Allah, by them bestow Your bounty upon us
With well-being in both abodes, for us and all our kin.
جَمِّل أَحْوالَنَا وَ ارْحَمْ وَ لَاتَمْتَحِنَّا
وَ الصَّلَاةُ عَلَى احْمَدْ مَاَ غَفَتْ كُلُّ عَيْنَا
jammil aḥwālanā war ḥam wa lātamtaḥinnā
waṣ ṣalātu ʿalāḥ mad māa ghafat kullu ʿaynā
Beautify our states, have mercy on us, and try us not
And prayers be upon Ahmad so long as any eye finds sleep.
