Fazzaziyya

مَعْنَى كَمـَالاتِ الـحَبِيبِ قَدِيمُ
maʿnā kamaālātil ḥabībi qadīmu
The essence of the Beloved’s perfections is primordial
وَلَهُ عَلَى كُلِّ الوَرَى التَّقْدِيمُ
walahu ʿalā kullil warat taqdīmu
And unto him over all creation is precedence
وَجَـمِيعُ مَا هُوَ بِالسِّوَى مَوْسُومُ
wajamīʿu mā huwa bis siwā mawsūmu
And all that is designated by otherness
لَفْظٌ بِهِ مَدْحُ النَّبِيِّ قَوِيمُ
يُنْشِي الـمَعَانِي الدُّرْسَ وَهْيَ رَمِيمُ
lafẓun bihi madḥun nabiyyi qawīmu
yunshīl maʿānīd dursa wahya ramīmu
Is a word through which the Prophet’s praise is upright
reviving effaced meanings while they are decayed
نَظَمَ الوُجُودَ بِجُودِ خَيْرِ مُؤَّيَّدٍ
naẓamal wujūda bijūdi khayri muayyadin
He ordered existence through the bounty of the best supported one
بِالوَحْيِ مِنْ رَبِّ السَّمَـاءِ مُسَدَّدٍ
bil waḥyi min rabbis samā’i musaddadin
Guided aright by revelation from the Lord of Heaven
فِي قَوْلِهِ لِلمَدْحِ أَعْظَمُ مَقْصَدٍ
fī qawlihi lilmadḥi aʿẓamu maqṣadin
In whose speech the greatest aim of praise resides
لَوْلَا نَظِيمٌ في مَدِيحِ مُحَمَّدٍ
مَا كَانَ يَـهْوَى الدُّرَّ وَهْوَ نَظِيمُ
lawlā naẓīmun fī madīḥi muḥammadin
mā kāna yahwad durra wahwa naẓīmu
Were it not for the composition in praise of Muhammad
one would not love the pearl as it is strung
إنَّ القَرِيضَ بِمَدْحِ أَحْمَدَ قَدْ غَلَا
ānnal qarīḍa bimadḥi aḥmada qad ghalā
Indeed, poetry has become precious through the praise of Ahmad
لِـمْ لَا وَقَدْرُ الـمُصْطَفَى فَوْقَ الـمَلَا
lim lā waqadrul muṣṭafā fawqal malā
Why not, when the Chosen One’s rank is above the assembly?
وَلَقَدْ عَلَا بِنِعَالِهِ مَا قَدْ عَلَا
walaqad ʿalā biniʿālihi mā qad ʿalā
And with his sandals, he ascended to what has ascended
لَيْلاً بِهِ أُسْرِي إِلَى رَبِّ العُلَا
فَرْداً وَذَلِكَ لَوْ عَلِمْتَ عَظِيمُ
laylan bihi usrī ilā rabbil ʿulā
fardan wadhalika law ʿalimta ʿaẓīmu
By night he was journeyed to the Lord of the Sublime
alone, and that—if thou but knew—is momentous
خَيْرُ الوَرَى عَلَمٌ رَفِيعٌ مُفْرَدٌ
khayrul warā ʿalamun rafīʿun mufradun
The best of creation is a lofty and singular banner
بِعُلَاهُ آدَمُ سَادَ وَهْوَ مُؤَيَّدٌ
biʿulāhu ādamu sāda wahwa muayyadun
By his loftiness Adam prevailed while being supported
وَلَهُ الـمَلَائِكَةُ الأَطَاهِرُ سُجَّدٌ
walahul malā’ikatul aṭāhiru sujjadun
And to him the pure angels were prostrate
لَمْ يُؤْتِ مُوسَى نَظْرَةً وَمَحَمَّدٌ
قَدْ صَارَ مِنْهُ كَقَابَ وَهْوَ كَلِيمُ
lam yu’ti mūsā naẓratan wamaḥammadun
qad ṣāra minhu kaqāba wahwa kalīmu
Moses was not granted the vision, while Muhammad
attained His proximity, though Moses was the Interlocutor
فِي لَيْلَةِ الـمِعْرَاجِ زُفَّ مُعَظَّمَـا
fī laylatil miʿrāji zuffa muʿaẓẓamā
On the night of the Ascension, he was ushered in greatness
وَمُتَوَّجاً تَاجَ الفَخَارِ مُكَرَّمَا
wamutawwajan tājal fakhāri mukarramā
And crowned with the crown of glory, honored
وَالكُلُّ بِالإِجْلَالِ كَانَ مُسْلِّمَـا
wal kullu bil ijlāli kāna musllimā
And everyone in reverence was submitting
لَـمَّـا سَمَـا وَرَأَى العَجَائِبَ في السَّمَـا
عُرِضَتْ عَلَيْهِ جَنَّةٌ وَجَحِيمُ
lammā samā wara’al ʿajā’iba fīs samā
ʿuriḍat ʿalayhi jannatun wajaḥīmu
When he ascended and saw the wonders in the heavens
Paradise and Hellfire were displayed before him
فَالفَخْرُ أَرْضُ عُلَاهُ وَهْوَ مَسُوَّدٌ
fal fakhru arḍu ʿulāhu wahwa masuwwadun
For glory is the soil of his height, and he is the master
فَوْقَ العُلَى بَل لِلعُلَى هُوَ مَقْصَدٌ
fawqal ʿulā bal lilʿulā huwa maqṣadun
Above the heights—nay, he is the goal of the heights
وَجَبِينُهُ وَلَهُ الأَهِلَّةُ سُجَّدٌ
wajabīnuhu walahul ahillatu sujjadun
And his forehead, to which the crescents prostrate
لَقَدِ اعْتَلَا قَدْراً وَنَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ
مَا كَانَ يَأْمُلُ قَلبُهُ وَيَرُومُ
laqadiʿ talā qadran wanāla muḥammadun
mā kāna ya’mulu qalbuhu wayarūmu
Muhammad has ascended in rank and attained
what his heart had hoped for and desired
حَازَ الـمَقَاصِدَ مِنْ بُدُوِّ ذَهَابِهِ
ḥāzal maqāṣida min buduwwi dhahābihi
He achieved the objectives from the start of his journey
لَـمَّـا مَشَى جِبْرِيلُ تَـحْتَ رِكَابِهِ
lammā mashā jibrīlu taḥta rikābihi
When Gabriel walked beneath his stirrup
وَبِمَـا رَأَى مِنْ رَبِّهِ في قَابِهِ
wabimā ra’ā min rabbihi fī qābihi
And by what he beheld of his Lord in His proximity
لَاحَتْ عَلَيْهِ في غَدَاةِ إِيَابِهِ
وَبَدَتْ جِهَاراً نَضْرَةٌ وَنَعِيمُ
lāḥat ʿalayhi fī ghadāti iyābihi
wabadat jihāran naḍratun wanaʿīmu
There shone upon him on the morn of his return
and appeared openly, radiance and bliss
وَعَلَيْهِ مِنْ شَمْسِ النُّبُوَّةِ رَوْنَقٌ
waʿalayhi min shamsin nubuwwati rawnaqun
And upon him is the splendor from the sun of Prophethood
وَمَقَامُهُ عَنْ كُلِّ قَيْدٍ مُطْلَقٌ
wamaqāmuhu ʿan kulli qaydin muṭlaqun
And his station is free from every bond
فَبِذِكْرِهِ كَأْسُ الـمَدِيحِ مُرَوَّقٌ
fabidhikrihi ka sul madīḥi murawwaqun
So through his mention, the cup of praise is clarified
لِـمُحَمَّدٍ وَصْفُ الكَمَـالِ مُـحَقَّقٌ
وَحَدِيثُهُ في الـمُرْسَلِينَ قَدِيمُ
limuḥammadin waṣful kamāli muḥaqqaqun
waḥadīthuhu fīl mursalīna qadīmu
For Muhammad, the description of perfection is realized
and his mention among the Messengers is primordial
مَا لِلعَذُولِ عَلَى الغَرَامِ وَصَبِّهِ
mā lilʿadhūli ʿalal gharāmi waṣabbihi
What business has the critic with love and its devotee?
فِي بَـهْجَةِ الـحُسْنِ البَدِيعِ وُلُبِّهِ
fī bahjatil ḥusnil badīʿi wulubbihi
In the splendor of wondrous beauty and its core
أَيَرُومُ سُلوَانِي بِزُخْرُفِ عَتْبِهِ
ayarūmu sulwānī bizukhrufi ʿatbihi
Does he seek my consolation through the veneer of his blame?
لِلعَذْلِ لَسْتُ بِسَامِعٍ فِي حُبِّهِ
فَإلَامَ يَطْنُبُ عَاذِلِي وَيَلُومُ
lilʿadhli lastu bisāmiʿin fī ḥubbihi
fa alāma yaṭnubu ʿādhilī wayalūmu
To the critic I am not listening regarding his love
so for how long will my blamer persist and reproach?
يَا عَاذِلِي إِنْ كُنْتَ لَسْتَ بِعَاذِرِي
yā ʿādhilī in kunta lasta biʿādhirī
O my blamer, if you are not to be my excuser
فِي طَلعَةِ الـحَسَنِ البَهِيِّ البَاهِرِ
fī ṭalʿatil ḥasanil bahiyyil bāhiri
Concerning the appearance of the radiant, brilliant beauty
فَاعْلَمْ بِأَنِّي مِنْ كَمِينِ سَرَائِرِي
faʿ lam bi annī min kamīni sarā’irī
Then know that from the depths of my secrets
لِلشُّهْبِ أَنْفَاسٌ تُرَاقِبُ خَاطِرِي
إِنْ رَامَ سَمْعاً فَالدُّمُوعُ زُحُومُ
lilshshuhbi anfāsun turāqibu khāṭirī
in rāma samʿan fad dumūʿu zuḥūmu
The meteors have breaths watching over my heart
if he seeks to eavesdrop, then tears are a throng
أَنَا سَاهِدٌ لَمْ أَدْرِ مَا طَعْمُ الكَرَى
anā sāhidun lam adri mā ṭaʿmul karā
I am sleepless, not knowing the taste of slumber
فِي حُبِّ مَنْ زَانَ الكَمَـالَ وَنَوَّرَا
fī ḥubbi man zānal kamāla wanawwarā
In the love of him who adorned perfection and brought light
أَهْوَى الـهَوَى فِيهِ وَتَعْنِيفَ الوَرَى
ahwal hawā fīhi wataʿnīfal warā
I love the passion for him and the rebuke of people
لَوْ بِاسْمِهِ نُودِيتُ مِنْ أَقْصَى الثَّرَى
مَيْتاً لَكُنْتُ مِنَ التُّرَابِ أَقُومُ
law bis mihi nūdītu min aqṣath tharā
maytan lakuntu minat turābi aqūmu
If by his name I were called from the furthest earth
as one dead, I would surely rise from the dust
