The Breezes of Your Love Carry a Fragrant Scent

nasamātu hawāka lahā araju
taḥyā wa taʿīshu bihal muhaju
The breezes of your love carry a fragrant scent;
By them, souls live and hearts thrive
mal nnāsu siwā qawmin ʿarafūka
wa ghaīruhumu hamajun hamaju
People are none but those who have known You,
And all others are but a senseless crowd
dakhalū fuqarā’a ilal ddunyā
wa kamā dakhalū minhā kharajū
They entered this world poor,
And just as they entered it, they departed
qawmun faʿalū khayran faʿalaw
wa ʿalā darajil ʿalyā darajū
A people who did good deeds, and thus they rose,
Ascending the steps of the highest ranks
nasamātu hawāka lahā araju
taḥyā wa taʿīshu bihal muhaju
The breezes of your love carry a fragrant scent;
By them, souls live and hearts thrive
mal nnāsu siwā qawmin ʿarafūka
wa ghaīruhumu hamajun hamaju
People are none but those who have known You,
And all others are but a senseless crowd
yā badru ʿalāmal hajru dujā
fal qalbu lifaqdika yanzaʿiju
O full moon, why has separation brought such darkness
For the heart is truly distressed by your absence
lā aʿtabu qalbal ghāfili ʿanka
falaīsa ʿalal aʿmā ḥaraju
I do not reproach the heart that is heedless of you,
For upon the blind, there is no blame
nasamātu hawāka lahā araju
taḥyā wa taʿīshu bihal muhaju
The breezes of your love carry a fragrant scent;
By them, souls live and hearts thrive
mal nnāsu siwā qawmin ʿarafūka
wa ghaīruhumu hamajun hamaju
People are none but those who have known You,
And all others are but a senseless crowd
yā muddaʿīan liṭarīqihimu
bādir faṭarīquka munʿaraju
O you who claim to follow their path,
Hasten, for your road is crooked
tahwā laylā wa tanāmul laīl
laʿamruka dhā fiʿlun samiju
You claim to love Layla, yet you sleep through the night,
By your life, such an act is truly disgraceful!
nasamātu hawāka lahā araju
taḥyā wa taʿīshu bihal muhaju
The breezes of your love carry a fragrant scent;
By them, souls live and hearts thrive
mal nnāsu siwā qawmin ʿarafūka
wa ghaīruhumu hamajun hamaju
People are none but those who have known You,
And all others are but a senseless crowd
yā badru badhlin lan nabraḥu
ʿan bābil ḥibbi fahal naliju
O moon of generosity, we will never depart
From the door of love, shall we be granted entry?
famatā biwiṣālika yā amalī
alḥānul ḥubbi lahā hazaju
So when, through union with you, O my hope,
Shall the melodies of love echo with joy?
nasamātu hawāka lahā araju
taḥyā wa taʿīshu bihal muhaju
The breezes of your love carry a fragrant scent;
By them, souls live and hearts thrive
mal nnāsu siwā qawmin ʿarafūka
wa ghaīruhumu hamajun hamaju
People are none but those who have known You,
And all others are but a senseless crowd
sharibū bikuūsi tafakkurihim
min ṣirfi hawāka wa mā mazajū
They drank, with the cups of their contemplation,
From the pure wine of Your love, unmixed and clear
fahimul maʿnā fuhumu maʿnā
wa bidhikrillāhi lahum lahaju
They understood the Meaning, so "Meaning" they became,
And their tongues are ever busy with the remembrance of God
