matā qalbush shajīl muḍnā limaghnākum yaʿūd
washamsul ḥaḍratil ḥasnā tuwāfī bish shuhūd
When shall the grieving, wasted heart return to your dwelling-place,
and the fair sun of the Presence come bearing witnessing itself?
kawaw fī jamratil ḥubbi fuādal mustahām
wakhaṭbī fīhimu khaṭbī waqad shabbal gharām
They seared the heart of the love-maddened one in the live coal of love,
and my suit among them is my suit alone — now that passion has blazed up.
wadamʿī waḍ ḍanā yunbī ʿanil wajdiḍ ḍirām
wafīhim ṭāba lī salbī walaw ṭālaṣ ṣudūd
My tears and my wasting away declare the conflagration of longing,
and among them even my despoiling grew sweet to me, though the turning-away ran long.
matā qalbush shajīl muḍnā limaghnākum yaʿūd
washamsul ḥaḍratil ḥasnā tuwāfī bish shuhūd
When shall the grieving, wasted heart return to your dwelling-place,
and the fair sun of the Presence come bearing witnessing itself?
alā yā ḥādiyar rakbi fa awjiz līṭ ṭarīq
wasir billāhi fī qalbī ilā aʿlā rafīq
O driver of the caravan, make my road short,
and travel, by God, within my heart, up to the Highest Companion.
wa in wāfā sanal ḥibbi fakhayyim bil ʿaqīq
washaffiʿ bidhawīl qurbi ʿasā ḥibbī yijūd
And if the radiance of the Beloved meets you, pitch your tent at al-ʿAqīq,
and let those brought near intercede — perhaps my Beloved will grant.
matā qalbush shajīl muḍnā limaghnākum yaʿūd
washamsul ḥaḍratil ḥasnā tuwāfī bish shuhūd
When shall the grieving, wasted heart return to your dwelling-place,
and the fair sun of the Presence come bearing witnessing itself?
wakhudh bil mughramiṣ ṣabbi liaʿtābil kirām
ʿasā an yarḥamū ṣabbī dumūʿan bin sijām
Take this lovesick debtor to the thresholds of the noble ones;
perhaps they will pity my ardour, my tears falling in cadence,
wayarḍawnī ʿalā ʿaybī bidhayyākal maqām
wayajlū waṣluhum karbī wayaḥlū līl wurūd
and accept me despite my flaw, there at that exalted station,
and their union will lift my anguish, and the coming to water turn sweet.
matā qalbush shajīl muḍnā limaghnākum yaʿūd
washamsul ḥaḍratil ḥasnā tuwāfī bish shuhūd
When shall the grieving, wasted heart return to your dwelling-place,
and the fair sun of the Presence come bearing witnessing itself?
alā yā jīratash shiʿbi ṣilū hadhal faqīr
wariqqū war ḥamū shaybī fahā damʿī ghazīr
O neighbours of al-Shiʿb, keep faith with this poor one;
soften, have mercy on my grey hairs — see, my tears pour out.
waghuḍḍūṭ ṭarfa ʿan dhanbī fabil ʿafwil kabīr
kathīrun fāza bil qurbi wa iṭlāqil quyūd
Avert your gaze from my sin, for by that vast forgiveness
many a one has won nearness, and the striking off of his chains.
matā qalbush shajīl muḍnā limaghnākum yaʿūd
washamsul ḥaḍratil ḥasnā tuwāfī bish shuhūd
When shall the grieving, wasted heart return to your dwelling-place,
and the fair sun of the Presence come bearing witnessing itself?
ṣalātul ḥibbi lilḥibbi ʿalā majlas salām
yuḥyīhi bihā rabbī naʿīman fīd dawam
The prayer of the lover, for the Beloved, upon the mirror-of-peace made manifest
may my Lord greet him with it in bliss that never ends,
wayasrī fayḍuhal wahbī ilal ālil kirām
wa yujdī shākirush shurbi kamaālan fīl wujūd
and may its freely-given overflow run on to the noble Household,
and may the grateful one who drank be granted completeness in all being.
