From the Beauty of the Universe Comes My Wine

مِنْ جَمَالِ الْكَوْنِ خَمْرِي
ذَقْتُهُ صِرْفاً حَلَالَا
min jamālil kawni khamrī
dhaqtuhu ṣirfan ḥalālā
From the beauty of the universe comes my wine,
I have tasted it pure, and it is lawful
وَهْوَ مِنْ أَوْصَافِ بَدْرِي
قَدْحَوَى ذَاكَ الْجَمَالَا
wahwa min awṣāfi badrī
qadḥawā dhākal jamālā
It is drawn from the qualities of my Full moon,
A beauty that encompasses all perfection
وَجْهٌ قَدْ لَاحَ سَنَاهْ
وَالْكَوْنُ غَدَا مِرْآهْ
wajhun qad lāḥa sanāh
wal kawnu ghadā mirāh
A countenance whose radiance has shone forth,
and the universe has become its mirror
إِنْ رُمْتَ فُؤَادِي لِقَاهْ
فَاجْعَلْ هَوَاكَ هَوَاهْ
in rumta fuādī liqāh
faj ʿal hawāka hawah
If your heart seeks to meet Him,
Then let your passion be aligned with His
أَنَا بِالْرُّوْحِ سَمَاءُ
أَنَا بِالْجِسْمِ هَبَاءُ
anā bil rruwḥi samā’u
anā bil jismi habā’u
In spirit, I am a vast heaven;
In body, I am dust
أَنَا زَهْرٌ أَنَا مَاءُ
تِهْتُ مِنْ وَجْدِي دَلَالَا
anā zahrun anā mā’u
tihtu min wajdī dalālā
I am a flower, I am water,
I am lost in the sweetness of my ecstasy
وَالْرُّوْحُ رَقَى مَرْقَاهْ
وَالْقَلْبُ غَدَا يَرْعَاهْ
wal rruwḥu raqā marqāh
wal qalbu ghadā yarʿāh
The spirit ascended to its lofty rank,
The heart came to tend and guard it
وَالْجِسْمُ سَعَى مَسْعَاهْ
لِيَنَالَ بِذَاكَ مُنَاهْ
wal jismu saʿā masʿāh
liyanāla bidhāka munāh
And the body hastened along its path
To attain thereby its deepest wish
يَا عَذُوْلاً لَامَ جَهْلاً
مُغْرَماً قَدْ نَالَ وَصْلَا
yā ʿadhuwlan lāma jahlan
mughraman qad nāla waṣlā
O blamer, who criticizes out of ignorance
A lover who has attained union
إِنْ تَلُمْ صِدْقاً سَتُبْلَى
وَتَذُوْقُ الْحُبَّ حَالاَ
in talum ṣidqan satublā
watadhuwqul ḥubba ḥaāla
if you blame with sincerity, you too will be tried,
And you would taste this love instantly
بِفَنَائِكَ عَنْ سِوَاهْ
تَأْوِيْ لِفِنَاءِ بَقَاهْ
bifanā’ika ʿan siwah
ta’wiy lifinā’i baqāh
By your annihilation from all else besides Him,
you take refuge in the vastness of His abiding
وَبِبَرْدِ شَرَابِ رِضَاهْ
يُطْفِي الْفُؤَادُ جَوَاهْ
wabibardi sharābi riḍāh
yuṭfīl fuādu jawah
And by the coolness of the drink of His pleasure,
The burning longing of the heart is extinguished
صَلَوَاتُ اللهِ تُهْدَى
مِنْ جَمِيْعِ الْطِّيْبِ أَنْدَى
ṣalawātu Allahi tuhdā
min jamiyʿil ṭṭiybi andā
May the prayers of God be gifted,
More fragrant than any perfume
لِرَسُوْلٍ قَدْ تَبَدَّى
نُوْرُهُ يَمْحُو الْضَّلَالَا
lirasuwlin qad tabaddā
nuwruhu yamḥūl ḍḍalālā
Upon the Messenger who appeared,
Whose light erases all misguidance
بِسَلامٍ لا يَتَنَاهْ
وَالْاَلِ أُهَيْلِ الْجَاهْ
bisalāmin lā yatanāh
wal ali uhaylil jāh
With a peace that never ends,
Upon his Family, the people of high standing
وَالْصَّحْبِ وَمَنْ وَالَاهْ
وَجِيْعِ رِجَالِ الله
wal ṣṣaḥbi waman wālāh
wajiyʿi rijālillāh
His Companions, and those who follow them,
and all the men of Allah
