Tell the one who has blamed me,
En
qul lilladhī qad lāmanī
daʿnī washa’nī yā ʿadhūl
Tell the one who has blamed me,
"Leave me to my own affairs, O censor!"
law kunta tadrī mā jarā
mā kunta tanhā yā jahūl
If you only knew what has happened,
You would not forbid it, O ignorant one!
amā tarā jismiyas saqīma
qad shaffahu dā’un nuḥūl
Do you not see my sickly body,
Worn down by the disease of emaciation?
qul lī biman hadhal ʿanā
wadhat taṣābī wadh dhuhūl
Tell me, for whose sake is this distress,
And this passionate yearning and bewilderment?
Allahu ḥasbī wakafa
qul mā tasha’ yā dhal fuḍūl
God is my sufficiency and enough;
Say what you wish, O meddler!
yā sākinīna sarā’irī
ʿindī lakum ṣafwul widād
O you who dwell within my innermost heart,
I hold for you pure and sincere affection.
mallaktukum yā sādatī
zimāma amrī wal qiyād
I have made you, O my masters,
The masters of my destiny and control.
lā tuhmilū man qad ghadā
yasmū bikum baynal ʿibād
Do not neglect the one who has risen
To be exalted by you among humanity,
wāqifun ʿalal bābi muqīmun
yarjūs saʿādata wal qabūl
Standing and staying at the gate,
Hoping for happiness and acceptance.
Allahu ḥasbī wakafa
qul mā tasha’ yā dhal fuḍūl
God is my sufficiency and enough;
Say what you wish, O meddler!
habbat nusaymātul wiṣaāl
min jānibil qudsil ʿaliyy
The gentle breezes of union have blown
From the side of the Exalted Holiness,
was taghraqat anwāruhā
ʿawālimal qalbil khaliyy
And their lights have overwhelmed
The realms of the vacant heart,
ʿammā siwā maʿbūdihi
alwāḥidil ḥaqqil waliyy
Detaching it from everything other than its Object of Worship
The One, the True, the Protecting Friend.
wakūshifat asrāruhu
waḥalla fī burjil wuṣūl
His secrets were unveiled,
And he settled in the mansion of union.
Allahu ḥasbī wakafa
qul mā tasha’ yā dhal fuḍūl
God is my sufficiency and enough;
Say what you wish, O meddler!
bātal muḥibbu maʿal ḥabīb
wal ʿādhilul ghāfilu baʿīd
The lover has spent the night with the Beloved,
While the heedless censor remains far away.
lam yadri mā sha’nul hawā
baynal mawālī wal ʿabīd
He knows nothing of the nature of passionate love
Between the masters and the servants.
yā wayḥahu mādhā ʿalayhi
law kāna yaʿrifu lilssaʿīd
Woe to him, what would it cost him
If he recognized the fortunate one's
makānahu min rabbihi
wa Allahu yaʿlamu mā yaqūl
Station in the presence of his Lord?
And God knows well what he says.
Allahu ḥasbī wakafa
qul mā tasha’ yā dhal fuḍūl
God is my sufficiency and enough;
Say what you wish, O meddler!
mādhā yaqūlul munkirūna
fīman lahu qalbun salīm
What can the deniers say
About one who possesses a sound heart,
muḥibbun lijamīʿil muslimīna
waqaṣduhul mawlal karīm
Loving all Muslims,
Whose sole intent is the Generous Master?
wayaʿtaqid fī nafsihi
bi annahu ʿabdun dhamīm
And who believes within himself
That he is a blameworthy servant,
lawlā ʿināyatu rabbihi
lakāna baṭṭaālan ḍalūl
Who, were it not for the care of his Lord,
Would have been utterly lost and straying.
Allahu ḥasbī wakafa
qul mā tasha’ yā dhal fuḍūl
God is my sufficiency and enough;
Say what you wish, O meddler!
