The Beautiful Couplet in Seeking Aid through the Most Beautiful Names of Allah

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي تَحَمَّدَا
كَلَّمَ مُوسَى وَاصْطَفَى مُحَمَّدَا
alḥamdu lillāhil ladhī taḥammada
kallama mūsā waṣ ṭafā muḥammadā
All praise belongs to Allah, the One who is ever praised,
Who spoke to Musa and chose Muhammad
ثُمَّ الْصَّلَاةُ وَالْسَّلَامُ تُهْتَدَى
لِخَيْرِ مُرْسَلٍ هَدَى وَسَدَّدَا
thummal ṣṣalātu wal ssalāmu tuhtadā
likhayri mursalin hadā wasaddadā
Then blessings and peace be offered as a gift,
To the best of Messengers, who guided and stayed true
وَالْآلِ وَالْصَّحْبِ وَمَنْ يَهْدِينَا
wal āli wal ṣṣaḥbi waman yahdīnā
And upon his family, his companions, and those who guide us
بِاسْمِ الْإِلَهِ وَبِهِ بَدِينَا
وَلَوْ عَبَدْنَا غَيْرَهُ شَقِينَا
bis mil ilahi wabihi badīnā
walaw ʿabadnā ghayrahu shaqīnā
In the Name of God, and with Him, we have begun,
Had we worshipped other than Him, we would be wretched
يَا حَبَّذَا رَبًّا وَحَبَّ وَدِينَا
وَحَبَّذَا مُحَمَّدٌ هَادِينَا
yā ḥabbadhā rabban waḥabba wadīnā
waḥabbadhā muḥammadun hādīnā
How excellent is such a Lord, and such love, and such a religion,
And how wonderful is Muhammad, our guide
لَوْلَاهُ مَا كُنَّا وَلَا بَقِينَا
lawlāhu mā kunnā walā baqīnā
Were it not for him, we would not have been, nor remained
الْلَّهُمَّ لَوْلَا أَنْتَ مَا اهْتَدَيْنَا
وَلَا تَصَدَّقْنَا وَلَا صَلَّيْنَا
Allahumma lawlā anta mah tadayna
walā taṣaddaqnā walā ṣallaynā
O Allah, were it not for You, we would not have been guided
Nor would we have given in charity, nor would we have prayed
فَأَنْزِلَنْ سَكِينَةً عَلَيْنَا
وَثَبِّتِ الْأَقْدَامَ إِنْ لَا قَيْنَا
fa anzilan sakīnatan ʿalaynā
wathabbitil aqdāma in lā qaynā
So send down tranquility upon us,
And make firm our feet if we meet [the enemy]
نَحْنُ الْأُ لَى جَاؤُوكَ مُسْلِمِينَا
naḥnul u lā jāūka muslimīnā
We are the ones who came to You in submission
وَالْمُشْرِكُونَ قَدْ بَغَوْا عَلَيْنَا
إِذَا أَرَادُوا فِتْنَةً أَبَيْنَا
wal mushrikūna qad baghaw ʿalaynā
idhā arādū fitnatan abaynā
The polytheists have transgressed against us;
Whenever they desire tribulation, we refuse
وَقَدْ تَدَاعَى جَمْعُهُمْ عَلَيْنَا
طِبْقَ الْأَحَادِيثَ الَّتِي رَوَيْنَا
waqad tadāʿā jamʿuhum ʿalaynā
ṭibqal aḥādīthal latī rawaynā
Their masses have gathered against us,
Just as the hadiths we have narrated foretold
فَارْدُدْهُمُ الْلَّهُمَّ خَاسِرِينَ
far dudhumu Allahumma khāsirīna
So turn them back, O Allah, in certain loss
اللَّهُ يَا رَحْمَنُ يَا رَحِيمُ
اللَّهُ يَا حَيُّ وَيَا قَيُّومُ
Allahu yā raḥmanu yā raḥīmu
Allahu yā ḥayyu wayā qayyūmu
Allah, O All-Merciful, O Compassionate,
Allah, O Living, O Self-subsistent,
اللَّهُ يَا قَوِيُّ يَا قَدِيمُ
اللَّهُ يَا عَلِيُّ يَا عَظِيمُ
Allahu yā qawiyyu yā qadīmu
Allahu yā ʿaliyyu yā ʿaẓīmu
Allah, O Strong, O Pre-Eternal,
Allah, O Most High, O Tremendous,
لَا يَنْبَغِي لِلْظُّلْمِ أَنْ يَعْلُونَا
lā yanbaghī lilẓẓulmi an yaʿlūnā
It is not fitting that injustice should prevail over us
اللَّهُ يَا لَطِيفُ يَا عَلِيمُ
اللَّهُ يَا رَؤُوفُ يَا حَكِيمُ
Allahu yā laṭīfu yā ʿalīmu
Allahu yā raūfu yā ḥakīmu
Allah, O Benevolent, O All-Knowing,
Allah, O One Who Shows Pity, O Wise,
اللَّهُ يَا تَوَّابُ يَا حَلِيمُ
اللَّهُ يَا وَهَّابُ يَا كَرِيمُ
Allahu yā tawwābu yā ḥalīmu
Allahu yā wahhābu yā karīmu
Allah, O Oft-Relenting, O Clement,
Allah, O Bestower, O Generous,
هَبْنَا الْعُلَا وَاجْعَلْ عِدَانَا الْدُّونَا
habnal ʿulā waj ʿal ʿidānal ddūnā
Grant us high status, and make our enemies low
اللَّهُ يَا مَالِكُ يَا مُنِيرُ
اللَّهُ يَا مَلِيكُ يَا قَدِيرُ
Allahu yā māliku yā munīru
Allahu yā malīku yā qadīru
Allah, O King, O Illuminating,
Allah, O Sovereign, O All-Powerful,
اللَّهُ يَا مَوْلَى وَيَا نَصِيرُ
اللَّهُ أَنْتَ الْمَلِكُ الْكَبِيرُ
Allahu yā mawlā wayā naṣīru
Allahu antal malikul kabīru
Allah, O Protector, O Helper,
Allah, You are the Great King,
لَيْسَ عِدَانَا لَكَ مُعْجِزِينَا
laysa ʿidānā laka muʿjizīnā
Our enemies cannot escape You
اللَّهُ يَا شَاكِرُ يَا شَكُورُ
اللَّهُ يَا عَفُوُّ يَا غَفُورُ
Allahu yā shākiru yā shakūru
Allahu yā ʿafuwwu yā ghafūru
Allah, O Appreciative, O Gracious,
Allah, O Pardoner, O All-Forgiving,
اللَّهُ يَا عَالِمُ يَا خَبِيرُ
اللَّهُ يَا فَتَّاحُ يَا بَصِيرُ
Allahu yā ʿālimu yā khabīru
Allahu yā fattāḥu yā baṣīru
Allah, O All-Knowing, O Totally Aware,
Allah, O Opener, O All-Seeing,
لَا تَحْرِمْنَا فَتْحَكَ الْمُبِينَا
lā taḥrimnā fatḥakal mubīnā
Do not deprive us of Your manifest victory
اللَّهُ يَا ظَاهِرُ يَا جَلِيلُ
اللَّهُ يَا بَاطِنُ يَا وَكِيلُ
Allahu yā ẓāhiru yā jalīlu
Allahu yā bāṭinu yā wakīlu
Allah, O Outward, O Majestic,
Allah, O Inward, O Trustee,
اللَّهُ يَا صَادِقُ يَا جَمِيلُ
اللَّهُ يَا حَافِظُ يَا كَفِيلُ
Allahu yā ṣādiqu yā jamīlu
Allahu yā ḥāfiẓu yā kafīlu
Allah, O Truthful, O Beautiful,
Allah, O Guardian, O Guarantor,
كُنْ حَافِظًا لَنَا وَكُنْ مُعِينَا
kun ḥāfiẓan lanā wakun muʿīnā
Be a Guardian for us, and our Helper
اللَّهُ يَا غَنِيُّ يَا حَمِيدُ
اللَّهُ يَا مُغْنِي وَيَا رَشِيدُ
Allahu yā ghaniyyu yā ḥamīdu
Allahu yā mughnī wayā rashīdu
Allah, O Rich, O Praised,
Allah, O Enricher, O One Who Guides,
اللَّهُ يَا مُبْدِئُ يَا مُعِيدُ
اللَّهُ يَا عَزِيزُ يَا مَجِيدُ
Allahu yā mubdi’u yā muʿīdu
Allahu yā ʿazīzu yā majīdu
Allah, O Beginner, O Restorer,
Allah, O Almighty, O Glorious,
لِعِزِّكَ الْتَّوْحِيدُ يَشْكُو الْهُوْنَا
liʿizzikal ttawḥīdu yashkūl huwnā
For the sake of Your might, monotheism complains of humiliation
اللَّهُ يَا قَادِرُ يَا مُقْتَدِرُ
اللَّهُ يَا قَاهِرُ يَا مُؤَخِّرُ
Allahu yā qādiru yā muqtadiru
Allahu yā qāhiru yā muakhkhiru
Allah, O All-Powerful, O Determiner,
Allah, O Dominator, O Delayer,
اللَّهُ يَا فَاطِرُ يَا مُصَوِّرُ
اللَّهُ يَا مُحْصِي وَيَا مُدَبِّرُ
Allahu yā fāṭiru yā muṣawwiru
Allahu yā muḥṣī wayā mudabbiru
Allah, O Originator, O Fashioner,
Allah, O Knower of Each Separate Thing, O Planner,
دَبِّرْ لَنَا وَدَمِّرِ الْعَادِينَا
dabbir lanā wadammiril ʿādīnā
Ordain for us, and destroy those who transgress against us
اللَّهُ يَا دَائِمُ لَا يَمُوتُ
اللَّهُ يَا قَائِمُ لَا يَفُوتُ
Allahu yā dā’imu lā yamūtu
Allahu yā qā’imu lā yafūtu
Allah, O Everlasting, who does not die,
Allah, O Self-Subsisting, from Whom nothing escapes
اللَّهُ يَا مُحْيِي وَيَا مُمِيتُ
اللَّهُ يَا مُغِيثُ يَا مُقِيتُ
Allahu yā muḥyī wayā mumītu
Allahu yā mughīthu yā muqītu
Allah, O Giver of Life, O Giver of Death,
Allah, O Rescuer, O Nourisher,
كُنْ غَوْثَنَا وَحِصْنَنَا الْحَصِينَا
kun ghawthanā waḥiṣnanal ḥaṣīnā
Be our aid and our fortified stronghold
اللَّهُ يَا بَاسِطُ أَنْتَ الْوَاسِعُ
اللَّهُ يَا قَابِضُ أَنْتَ الْمَانِعُ
Allahu yā bāsiṭu antal wāsiʿu
Allahu yā qābiḍu antal māniʿu
Allah, O He Who Expands, You are the Vast,
Allah, O He Who Contracts, You are the Witholder,
اللَّهُ يَا خَالِقُ أَنْتَ الْجَامِعُ
اللَّهُ يَا خَافِضُ أَنْتَ الْرَّافِعُ
Allahu yā khāliqu antal jāmiʿu
Allahu yā khāfiḍu antal rrāfiʿu
Allah, O Creator, You are the Gatherer,
Allah, O Abaser, You are the Exalter,
اِرْفَعْ مَعَالِينَا لِعِلِّيِّينَا
irfaʿ maʿālīnā liʿilliyyīnā
Raise our ranks to the highest heights
اللَّهُ ذُو الْمَعَارِجِ الْرَّفِيعُ
اللَّهُ يَا وَافِي وَيَا سَرِيعُ
Allahu dhūl maʿārijil rrafīʿu
Allahu yā wāfī wayā sarīʿu
Allah, Possessor of the Ascents, the Exalted,
Allah, O Faithful, O Swift,
اللَّهُ يَا كَافِي وَيَا سَمِيعُ
يَا نُورُ يَا هَادِي وَيَا بَدِيعُ
Allahu yā kāfī wayā samīʿu
yā nūru yā hādī wayā badīʿu
Allah, O Sufficient, O All-Hearing,
O Light, O Guide, O Originator,
أَدَّبْتَنَا بِمَا جَرَى يَكْفِينَا
addabtanā bimā jarā yakfīnā
What has happened to us is enough to discipline us
اللَّهُ ذُو الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ
اللَّهُ ذُو الْطَّوْلِ عَلَى الْدَّوَامِ
Allahu dhūl jalāli wal ikrāmi
Allahu dhūl ṭṭawli ʿalal ddawāmi
Allah, Possessor of Majesty and Generosity,
Allah, Possessor of perpetual abundance
اللَّهُ يَا ذَا الْفَضْلِ وَالْإِنْعَامِ
وَالْسَّيِّدُ الْمِطْلَقُ لِلْأَنَامِ
Allahu yā dhal faḍli wal inʿāmi
wal ssayyidul miṭlaqu lilanāmi
Allah, O Possessor of bounty and bestowal,
And the Absolute Master of all creation,
ارْحَمْ عَبَيْدًا لَكَ عَابِدِينَا
ārḥam ʿabaydan laka ʿābidīnā
Have mercy on servants who worship You
اللَّهُ يَا أَوَّلُ أَنْتَ الْوَاحِدُ
اللَّهُ يَا آخِرُ أَنْتَ الْرَّاشِدُ
Allahu yā awwalu antal wāḥidu
Allahu yā ākhiru antal rrāshidu
Allah, O First, You are the One,
Allah, O Last, You are the One Who Guides,
يَا وِتْرُ يَا مُتَكَبِّرُ يَا وَاجِدُ
يَا بَرُّ يَا مُتَفَضِّلُ يَا مَاجِدُ
yā witru yā mutakabbiru yā wājidu
yā barru yā mutafaḍḍilu yā mājidu
O One, O Proud, O Resourceful,
O Kind, O Bountiful, O Magnificent,
بِفَضْلِكَ اقْبَلْنَا عَلَى مَا فِينَا
bifaḍlikaq balnā ʿalā mā fīnā
By Your Grace, accept us despite what is within us
اللَّهُ يَا مُبِينُ يَا وَدُودُ
اللَّهُ يَا مُحِيطُ يَا شَهِيدُ
Allahu yā mubīnu yā wadūdu
Allahu yā muḥīṭu yā shahīdu
Allah, O Manifest, O Loving,
Allah, O All-Encompassing, O Witness,
اللَّهُ يَا مَتِينُ يَا شَدِيدُ
يَا مَنْ هُوَ الْفَعَّالُ مَا يُرِيدُ
Allahu yā matīnu yā shadīdu
yā man huwal faʿʿālu mā yurīdu
Allah, O Firm, O Mighty in severity,
O He who is the doer of whatever He wills,
إِنَّا ضِعَافٌ لَكَ قَدْ لَجِينَا
innā ḍiʿāfun laka qad lajīnā
We are weak, and to You we have turned for refuge
اللَّهُ يَا مُعِزُّ يَا مُقَدِّمُ
اللَّهُ يَا مُذِلُّ يَا مُنْتَقِمُ
Allahu yā muʿizzu yā muqaddimu
Allahu yā mudhillu yā muntaqimu
Allah, O Honorer, O One Who Brings Forward,
Allah, O Humbler, O Avenger,
الْبَادِئُ الْبَاقِي فَلَا يَنْعَدِمُ
الْمُحْسِنُ الْوَالِي الْحَفِيظُ الْأَكْرَمُ
albādi’ul bāqī falā yanʿadimu
almuḥsinul wālīl ḥafīẓul akramu
The Beginner, the Everlasting, who does not cease to be,
The Beneficent, the Ruler, the Guardian, the Most Generous,
ليسَ لَنَا سِوَاكَ مَنْ يَحْمِينَا
līsa lanā siwāka man yaḥmīnā
We have none besides You to protect us
اللَّهُ يَا وَارِثُ أَنْتَ الْأَبَدُ
اللَّهُ يَا بَاعِثُ أَنْتَ الْأَحَدُ
Allahu yā wārithu antal abadu
Allahu yā bāʿithu antal aḥadu
Allah, O Inheritor, You are the Everlasting,
Allah, O Raiser, You are the One,
يَا مَالِكَ الْمُلْكِ الْإِلَهُ الْصَّمَدُ
لَا كُفُوءٌ لَا وَالِدٌ لَا وَلَدُ
yā mālikal mulkil ilahul ṣṣamadu
lā kufū’un lā wālidun lā waladu
O Absolute Sovereign, the God, the Alone,
No equal, no parent, and no son,
كُفَّ الْعِدَا عَنَّا فَقَدْ أُوذِينَا
kuffal ʿidā ʿannā faqad ūdhīnā
Restrain the enemies from us, for we have been harmed
اللَّهُ يَا غَالِبُ يَا قَهَّارُ
اللَّهُ يَا نَافِعُ أَنْتَ الْضَّارُّ
Allahu yā ghālibu yā qahhāru
Allahu yā nāfiʿu antal ḍḍārru
Allah, O Prevailing One, O Dominator,
Allah, O One Who Benefits, You are the One Who Harms,
اللَّهُ يَا بَارِئُ يَا غَفَّارُ
يَا رَبُّ يَا ذَا الْقُوَّةِ الْجَبَّارُ
Allahu yā bāri’u yā ghaffāru
yā rabbu yā dhal quwwatil jabbāru
Allah, O Maker, O Oft-Forgiving,
O Lord, O Possessor of Strength, the Compeller,
قَوِّمْ لَنَا الْدُّنْيَا وَقَوِّ الْدِّينَا
qawwim lanal ddunyā waqawwil ddīnā
Set right our worldly affairs, and strengthen the religion
اللَّهُ رَبُّ الْعِزَّةِ الْسَّلَامُ
الْمُؤْمِنُ الْمُهَيْمِنُ الْعَلَّامُ
Allahu rabbul ʿizzatil ssalāmu
almu’minul muhayminul ʿallāmu
Allah, Lord of Might, the Flawless,
The Faithful, the Guardian, the All-Knowing,
ذُو الْرَّحْمَةِ الْأَعْلَى الْأَعَزُّ التَّامُّ
مَنْ دِينُهُ الْحَقُّ هُوَ الْإِسْلَامُ
dhūl rraḥmatil aʿlal aʿazzut tāmmu
man dīnuhul ḥaqqu huwal islāmu
Possessor of mercy, the Most High, the Perfect Almighty,
He whose true religion is Islam
قَيِّضْ لَهُ الْلَّهُمَّ نَاصِرِينَا
qayyiḍ lahu Allahumma nāṣirīnā
So appoint for it, O Allah, helpers
اللَّهُ أَنْتَ الْمُتَعَالِي الْحَكَمُ
الْفَرْدُ ذُو الْعَرْشِ الْوَلِيُّ الْأَحْكَمُ
Allahu antal mutaʿālīl ḥakamu
alfardu dhūl ʿarshil waliyyul aḥkamu
Allah, You are the Exalted, the Judge,
The Unique, Possessor of the Throne, the Patron, the Most Wise,
الْغَافِرُ الْمُعْطِي الْجَوَادُ الْمُنْعِمُ
الْعَادِلُ الْعَدْلُ الْصَّبُورُ الْأَرْحَمُ
alghāfirul muʿṭīl jawādul munʿimu
alʿādilul ʿadlul ṣṣabūrul arḥamu
The Forgiver, the Giver, the Most Generous, the Bestower of Blessings,
The Just, the Equitable, the Patient, the Most Merciful,
مَكِّنْ لَنَا فِي أَرْضِنَا تَمْكِينَا
makkin lanā fī arḍinā tamkīnā
Establish us firmly in our land
اللَّهُ يَا قُدُّوسُ يَا بُرْهَانُ
يَا بَرُّ يَا حَنَّانُ يَا مَنَّانُ
Allahu yā quddūsu yā burhānu
yā barru yā ḥannānu yā mannānu
Allah, O Holy, O Clear Proof,
O Kind, O He who is merciful to His servants., O Bestower of Gifts,
يَا حَقُّ يَا مُقْسِطُ يَا دَيَّانُ
تَبَارَكَتْ أَسْمَاؤُكَ الْحِسَانُ
yā ḥaqqu yā muqsiṭu yā dayyānu
tabārakat asmāukal ḥisānu
O Real, O Equitable, O Judge,
Blessed are Your Beautiful Names,
بِهَا قَرَعْنَا بَابَكَ الْمَصُونَا
bihā qaraʿnā bābakal maṣūnā
By them we have knocked upon Your protected door
اللَّهُ يَا خَلَّاقُ يَا مُنِيبُ
اللَّهُ يَا رَزَّاقُ يَا حَسِيبُ
Allahu yā khallāqu yā munību
Allahu yā razzāqu yā ḥasību
Allah, O Great Creator, O One to Whom all return,
Allah, O Provider, O Reckoner,
اللَّهُ يَا قَرِيبُ يَا رَقِيبُ
الْمُسْتَعَانُ الْسَّامِعُ الْمُجِيبُ
Allahu yā qarību yā raqību
almustaʿānul ssāmiʿul mujību
Allah, O Near, O Watcher,
The One sought for aid, the All-Hearing, the Answerer of Prayers,
إِنَّا دَعَوْنَاكَ اسْتَجِبْ آمِينَا
innā daʿawnākas tajib āmīnā
We have called upon You, so answer us, Ameen
