salū fuādī salūhu fahwa yukhbirukum
ʿannī idhā ghibtum idh fīhi maḥḍarukum
Ask my heart, ask it, for it shall inform you
About me when you are away, for within it lies your presence
ayā budūran anāral kawna maẓharukum
lawlā taʿallulu qalbī ḥīna adhkurukum
O moons whose radiant appearance has illumined the universe!
Were it not for my heart seeking solace whenever I remember you
wawaḍʿu kaffī ʿalayhi janna awṭāran
law shāba damʿī biḥāral arḍi aghraqahā
And placing my palm over it, it would have been driven mad with yearning
If my tears were mingled with the seas of the earth, they would drown them
min muqlatin ḥarru nārish shawqi arraqahā
wal wajdu qassama aḥshā’ī wafarraqahā
Flowing from an eye kept sleepless by the burning fire of longing
Love has shattered my very depths and torn them asunder
law qarrabūn nāra min qalbī la’aḥraqahā
fahal samiʿtum biqalbin aḥraqan nārā
Were they to bring fire near my heart, my heart would burn the fire itself
Have you ever heard of a heart that set the fire itself ablaze?
