مُوَدَّعْ مُوَدَّعْ يَا رَمَضَانْ

Farewell, Farewell, O Ramadan

Transliterate

Translation

مُوَدَّعْ مُوَدَّعْ يَا رَمَضَانْ

وَ نَسْتَودِعُ اللهَ شَهْرَ الصِّيام

muwaddaʿ muwaddaʿ yā ramaḍān

wa nastawdiʿu Allaha shahraṣ ṣīām

Farewell, farewell, O Ramadan,

And we entrust the Month of Fasting to the care of Allah

حُوَيْدِي أَعِدْ لِي (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

حَدِيثَ الْحَبَائِبْ (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

ḥuwaydī aʿid lī yā ramaḍān

ḥadīthal ḥabā’ib yā ramaḍān

O the one who sings for me,

repeat for me the stories of the beloved ones

مُوَدَّعْ مُوَدَّعْ يَا رَمَضَانْ

وَ نَسْتَودِعُ اللهَ شَهْرَ الصِّيام

muwaddaʿ muwaddaʿ yā ramaḍān

wa nastawdiʿu Allaha shahraṣ ṣīām

Farewell, farewell, O Ramadan,

And we entrust the Month of Fasting to the care of Allah

وَمَا حَالَ مِنْهُمْ (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

عَنِ الْعَيْنِ غَائِبْ (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

wamā ḥāla minhum yā ramaḍān

ʿanil ʿayni ghā’ib yā ramaḍān

And those who have

departed from my sight

مُوَدَّعْ مُوَدَّعْ يَا رَمَضَانْ

وَ نَسْتَودِعُ اللهَ شَهْرَ الصِّيام

muwaddaʿ muwaddaʿ yā ramaḍān

wa nastawdiʿu Allaha shahraṣ ṣīām

Farewell, farewell, O Ramadan,

And we entrust the Month of Fasting to the care of Allah

جَمِيلُ الْمُحَيَّا (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

جَعِيد أَمْ ذَوَائِبْ (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

jamīlul muḥayyā yā ramaḍān

jaʿīd am dhawā’ib yā ramaḍān

The one with the beautiful countenance,

(his hair) curled or locked

مُوَدَّعْ مُوَدَّعْ يَا رَمَضَانْ

وَ نَسْتَودِعُ اللهَ شَهْرَ الصِّيام

muwaddaʿ muwaddaʿ yā ramaḍān

wa nastawdiʿu Allaha shahraṣ ṣīām

Farewell, farewell, O Ramadan,

And we entrust the Month of Fasting to the care of Allah

رَعَا الله لَيَالِي (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

حُظِينَا بِوَصْلِه (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

raʿa Allah layālī yā ramaḍān

ḥuẓīnā biwaṣlih yā ramaḍān

May Allah preserve these nights,

so that we could attain union with him (the beloved)

مُوَدَّعْ مُوَدَّعْ يَا رَمَضَانْ

وَ نَسْتَودِعُ اللهَ شَهْرَ الصِّيام

muwaddaʿ muwaddaʿ yā ramaḍān

wa nastawdiʿu Allaha shahraṣ ṣīām

Farewell, farewell, O Ramadan,

And we entrust the Month of Fasting to the care of Allah

وَطَابَ اتِّصَالِي (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

بِعَلِّهْ وَنَهْلِهْ (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

waṭābat tiṣālī yā ramaḍān

biʿallih wanahlih yā ramaḍān

And my attachment good

with his drink (in the hereafter)

مُوَدَّعْ مُوَدَّعْ يَا رَمَضَانْ

وَ نَسْتَودِعُ اللهَ شَهْرَ الصِّيام

muwaddaʿ muwaddaʿ yā ramaḍān

wa nastawdiʿu Allaha shahraṣ ṣīām

Farewell, farewell, O Ramadan,

And we entrust the Month of Fasting to the care of Allah

فَيَا ذَا الْجَلَالِ (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

لُفْ شَمْلِي بِشَمْلِه (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

fayā dhal jalāli yā ramaḍān

luf shamlī bishamlih yā ramaḍān

So, O He Who Possesses Majesty,

connect my bonds with his (Muhammad ﷺ)!

مُوَدَّعْ مُوَدَّعْ يَا رَمَضَانْ

وَ نَسْتَودِعُ اللهَ شَهْرَ الصِّيام

muwaddaʿ muwaddaʿ yā ramaḍān

wa nastawdiʿu Allaha shahraṣ ṣīām

Farewell, farewell, O Ramadan,

And we entrust the Month of Fasting to the care of Allah

فَقَلْبِي مِنَ الْبُعْدِ (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

وَالْهَجْرِ ذَائِبْ (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

faqalbī minal buʿdi yā ramaḍān

wal hajri dhā’ib yā ramaḍān

For my heart is melting

from distance and separation,

مُوَدَّعْ مُوَدَّعْ يَا رَمَضَانْ

وَ نَسْتَودِعُ اللهَ شَهْرَ الصِّيام

muwaddaʿ muwaddaʿ yā ramaḍān

wa nastawdiʿu Allaha shahraṣ ṣīām

Farewell, farewell, O Ramadan,

And we entrust the Month of Fasting to the care of Allah

أَنَا سَأَتِرُك الْهَمْ (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

وَوَاصِلْ سُرُورِي (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

anā sa’atirukal ham yā ramaḍān

wawāṣil surūrī yā ramaḍān

I will leave all sadness,

and continue to be happy

مُوَدَّعْ مُوَدَّعْ يَا رَمَضَانْ

وَ نَسْتَودِعُ اللهَ شَهْرَ الصِّيام

muwaddaʿ muwaddaʿ yā ramaḍān

wa nastawdiʿu Allaha shahraṣ ṣīām

Farewell, farewell, O Ramadan,

And we entrust the Month of Fasting to the care of Allah

وَلِي رَبِّ يَعْلَمْ (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

بِخَافِي أُمُورِي (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

walī rabbi yaʿlam yā ramaḍān

bikhāfī umūrī yā ramaḍān

I have a Lord who knows

the hidden depths of my affairs,

مُوَدَّعْ مُوَدَّعْ يَا رَمَضَانْ

وَ نَسْتَودِعُ اللهَ شَهْرَ الصِّيام

muwaddaʿ muwaddaʿ yā ramaḍān

wa nastawdiʿu Allaha shahraṣ ṣīām

Farewell, farewell, O Ramadan,

And we entrust the Month of Fasting to the care of Allah

أَرَى اللَّوْمَ عِنْدِي (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

خَطَا غَيْرَ صَائِبْ (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

aral lawma ʿindī yā ramaḍān

khaṭā ghayra ṣā’ib yā ramaḍān

I see that rebuking

is wrong not right

مُوَدَّعْ مُوَدَّعْ يَا رَمَضَانْ

وَ نَسْتَودِعُ اللهَ شَهْرَ الصِّيام

muwaddaʿ muwaddaʿ yā ramaḍān

wa nastawdiʿu Allaha shahraṣ ṣīām

Farewell, farewell, O Ramadan,

And we entrust the Month of Fasting to the care of Allah

أَنَا مُسْتَجِير بِالْ (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

جَمَالِ الْمُكَمَّلْ (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

anā mustajīr bil yā ramaḍān

jamālil mukammal yā ramaḍān

I seek protection with

the (blessings of the one who possesses) perfected beauty

مُوَدَّعْ مُوَدَّعْ يَا رَمَضَانْ

وَ نَسْتَودِعُ اللهَ شَهْرَ الصِّيام

muwaddaʿ muwaddaʿ yā ramaḍān

wa nastawdiʿu Allaha shahraṣ ṣīām

Farewell, farewell, O Ramadan,

And we entrust the Month of Fasting to the care of Allah

وَمَنْ فِي النَّبِيِّينَ (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

أَفْضَلْ وَأَكْمَلْ (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

waman fīn nabiyyīna yā ramaḍān

afḍal wa akmal yā ramaḍān

And who is the best

and most complete amongst the prophets

مُوَدَّعْ مُوَدَّعْ يَا رَمَضَانْ

وَ نَسْتَودِعُ اللهَ شَهْرَ الصِّيام

muwaddaʿ muwaddaʿ yā ramaḍān

wa nastawdiʿu Allaha shahraṣ ṣīām

Farewell, farewell, O Ramadan,

And we entrust the Month of Fasting to the care of Allah

أَبُو الْقَاسِمْ أَحْمَد (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

لَنَا خَيْرَ مُرْسَلْ (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

abūl qāsim aḥmad yā ramaḍān

lanā khayra mursal yā ramaḍān

Abu al-Qasim, Ahmad,

is for us the best of Messengers,

مُوَدَّعْ مُوَدَّعْ يَا رَمَضَانْ

وَ نَسْتَودِعُ اللهَ شَهْرَ الصِّيام

muwaddaʿ muwaddaʿ yā ramaḍān

wa nastawdiʿu Allaha shahraṣ ṣīām

Farewell, farewell, O Ramadan,

And we entrust the Month of Fasting to the care of Allah

بِهِ تَنْقَضِي لِي (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

جَمِيعُ الْمَطَالِبْ (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

bihi tanqaḍī lī yā ramaḍān

jamīʿul maṭālib yā ramaḍān

Through him, all my needs

and desires are fulfilled

مُوَدَّعْ مُوَدَّعْ يَا رَمَضَانْ

وَ نَسْتَودِعُ اللهَ شَهْرَ الصِّيام

muwaddaʿ muwaddaʿ yā ramaḍān

wa nastawdiʿu Allaha shahraṣ ṣīām

Farewell, farewell, O Ramadan,

And we entrust the Month of Fasting to the care of Allah

وَمَنْ كَانَ جَدُّهْ (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

مُحَمَّدْ تَبَجَّحْ (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

waman kāna jadduh yā ramaḍān

muḥammad tabajjaḥ yā ramaḍān

Whoever can boast of

Muhammad as his forefather,

مُوَدَّعْ مُوَدَّعْ يَا رَمَضَانْ

وَ نَسْتَودِعُ اللهَ شَهْرَ الصِّيام

muwaddaʿ muwaddaʿ yā ramaḍān

wa nastawdiʿu Allaha shahraṣ ṣīām

Farewell, farewell, O Ramadan,

And we entrust the Month of Fasting to the care of Allah

فَفِي كُلِّ وَزْنَةْ (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

فَوَزْنَتُهْ أَرْجَحْ (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

fafī kulli waznah yā ramaḍān

fawaznatuh arjaḥ yā ramaḍān

For every weight (of deed),

his weight will be heavier (if accompanied with taqwa)

مُوَدَّعْ مُوَدَّعْ يَا رَمَضَانْ

وَ نَسْتَودِعُ اللهَ شَهْرَ الصِّيام

muwaddaʿ muwaddaʿ yā ramaḍān

wa nastawdiʿu Allaha shahraṣ ṣīām

Farewell, farewell, O Ramadan,

And we entrust the Month of Fasting to the care of Allah

بِبَرْكَتِهْ رَبِّي (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

يُجَاوِزْ وَيَسْمَحْ (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

bibarkatih rabbī yā ramaḍān

yujāwiz wayasmaḥ yā ramaḍān

By his blessing, my Lord

overlooks and pardons [my faults],

مُوَدَّعْ مُوَدَّعْ يَا رَمَضَانْ

وَ نَسْتَودِعُ اللهَ شَهْرَ الصِّيام

muwaddaʿ muwaddaʿ yā ramaḍān

wa nastawdiʿu Allaha shahraṣ ṣīām

Farewell, farewell, O Ramadan,

And we entrust the Month of Fasting to the care of Allah

إِذَا اغْيَتْ عَلَيْنَا (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

جَمِيعُ الْمَذَاهِبْ (يَا رَمَضَانْ)

idhagh yat ʿalaynā yā ramaḍān

jamīʿul madhāhib yā ramaḍān

When all other paths

become difficult upon us
