To Gaze Upon Any Beauty but Yours Is Forbidden to Me
En
lighayri jamālikum naẓarī ḥarāmu
waghayru kalāmukum ʿindī kilāmu
To gaze upon any beauty but yours is forbidden to me,
And no speech but yours is speech to me
waʿumrul nnasri minkum baʿḍu yawmin
wasāʿatu ghayrikum ʿāmun faʿāmu
And the lifespan of an eagle with you is but part of a day,
While an hour with others is year after year
waṣabrī ʿankumu shay’un muḥālun
wamā lī qātilun illal fiṭāmu
And to endure separation from you is impossible for me,
And nothing can slay me but being weaned from you
idhā ʿāyantukum zālat humūmiy
wa in ghibtum danā minniyal ḥimāmu
When I behold you, all my worries vanish,
But if you are absent, death draws near to me
awaddu bi an akūna lakum jalīsan
watunṣaba lī birabʿikumu khiyāmu
I long to sit in your company,
And for tents to be pitched for me in your abode
fadāwū bil wiṣāli marīḍa hajrin
yahīmu bikum idhā sajaʿal ḥamāmu
So heal, through union, one made ill by separation,
Who wanders lovestruck for you whenever the doves coo
ḥadīthu gharāmihi fīkum qadīmun
wamalbasuhu minal ḥubbil ssiqāmu
The tale of his love for you is ancient,
And the garment he wears from love is sickness
fa antum fīl uṣūli ajallu aṣlin
idhā shi’tum taḥaṣṣala līl marāmu
For among all origins, you are the noblest origin,
And if you so will, my desire shall be fulfilled
bikum ṣaʿbul umūri yaʿūdu sahlan
fabil iḥsāni jūdū yā kirāmu
Through you, difficult matters become easy,
So bestow your kindness generously, O noble ones
walaysa siwākumu liljūdi ahlan
fakayfa nazīlu sūḥikumu yuḍāmu
And none but you are worthy of such generosity,
So how could one who dwells in your courtyards ever be wronged
