Translation

I envy the sand that met his feet

Invidio la sabbia che i suoi piedi incontrò

I’m jealous of honey he tasted sweet

Sono geloso del miele che egli gustò così dolce

Of birds that hovered above his head

Degli uccelli che volteggiarono sul suo capo

Of spiders who spun their sacred web

Dei ragni che tesero la loro sacra tela

To save him from his enemies

Per trarlo in salvo dai suoi nemici

I envy clouds formed from the seas

Invidio le nubi sorte dai mari

That gave him cover from the heat

Che gli offrirono riparo dal calore

Of a sun whose light could not compete

Di un sole la cui luce non poteva competere

With his, whose face did shine so bright

Con la sua, il cui volto splendeva così radioso

That all was clear in blinding night

Che tutto era chiaro nella notte abbagliante

I envy sightless trees that gazed

Invidio gli alberi ciechi che lo contemplarono

Upon his form completely dazed

Dinanzi alla sua forma del tutto storditi

Not knowing if the sun had risen

Senza sapere se il sole fosse già sorto

But felt themselves in unison

Ma sentendosi in perfetta armonia

With those who prayed, and fasted too

Con coloro che pregarono, e digiunarono pure

Simply because he told them to

Semplicemente perché lui aveva chiesto di farlo

With truth and kindness, charity

Con verità e gentilezza, e carità

From God who gave such clarity

Da Dio che concesse tale chiarezza

His mercy comes in one He sent

La Sua misericordia giunge in colui che Egli inviò

To mold our hearts more heaven bent

Per volgere i nostri cuori più verso il cielo

I envy all there at his side

Invidio tutti coloro che gli furono accanto

Who watched the turning of the tide

Che osservarono il mutare della marea

As truth prevailed and falsehood fled

Mentre la verità prevaleva e il falso fuggiva

And hope restored life to the dead

E la speranza ridonava la vita ai morti

Men and Women through him found grace

Uomini e donne per suo mezzo trovarono grazia

To seek together God’s noble face

Per cercare insieme il nobile volto di Dio

I envy the cup that gave him drink

Invidio la coppa che gli diede da bere

His thoughts that helped us all to think

I suoi pensieri che aiutarono tutti noi a pensare

To be one thought that passed his mind

Per essere un solo pensiero passato nella sua mente

Inspiring him to act so kind

Ispirandolo ad agire con tale benevolenza

For me this world is not one jot

Per me questo mondo non vale un nulla

If I could simply be a thought

Se potessi essere semplicemente un pensiero

From him to God throughout the ages

Da lui a Dio attraverso i secoli

As revelation came in stages

Mentre la rivelazione giungeva per gradi

I pity all who think it odd

Compatisco chiunque trovi bizzarro

To hear him say there is one God

Sentirgli dire che vi è un solo Dio

Or he was sent by God to men

O che fu inviato da Dio agli uomini

To hone their spirits’ acumen

Per affinare l'acume dei loro spiriti

It’s pride that blinds us from the sight

È l'orgoglio che ci acceca la vista

That helps good men to see his light

Che aiuta i giusti a vedere la sua luce

He taught us all to be God’s slaves

Egli insegnò a tutti noi a essere servi di Dio

And he will be the one who saves

E sarà lui colui che salverà

Humanity from sinful pride

L'umanità dal peccaminoso orgoglio

Muhammad has God on his side

Muhammad ha Dio dalla sua parte

So on this day be blessed and sing

In questo giorno dunque siate lieti e cantate

For he was born to grace our Spring

Poiché egli nacque per onorare la nostra Primavera

With lilies, flowers, life’s rebirth

Con gigli, fiori, la rinascita della vita

In a dome of green like his on earth
