Spring’s Gift
Wo
Wo
I envy the sand that met his feet
Damay kiñaan suuf si daj ak tànkam
I’m jealous of honey he tasted sweet
Damay kiñaan lem gu mu nàmpi
Of birds that hovered above his head
Ak picc yi doon weer seeni laaf
Of spiders who spun their sacred web
Ak jargoñ yi firi seeni kër
To save him from his enemies
Ngir musal ko ci ay noonam
I envy clouds formed from the seas
Damay kiñaan niir yi jogé géej
That gave him cover from the heat
Ngir kërale ko tàngaayub jant
Of a sun whose light could not compete
Jant boobu nga xam ne leeram
With his, whose face did shine so bright
Ak kanamam gu doon ni leer
That all was clear in blinding night
Ba guddi gu lëndëm jëmm
I envy sightless trees that gazed
Damay kiñaan garab yi gisuñu
Upon his form completely dazed
Ci jëmmam ju rafet ja
Not knowing if the sun had risen
Xamuñu ndax jant fenq na
But felt themselves in unison
Waaye ñu ngi doon sànt
With those who prayed, and fasted too
Ak ñi doon julli ak ñi woor
Simply because he told them to
Ndax ndigalam lañu doon sàmm
With truth and kindness, charity
Ak dëgg ak nongo ak tàbbe
From God who gave such clarity
Yàlla mi ko won yoonu leer
His mercy comes in one He sent
Yërmandeem dikkal na ñu
To mold our hearts more heaven bent
Ngir xol yi jublu ci asmaan
I envy all there at his side
Damay kiñaan ñi sàkkool ak moom
Who watched the turning of the tide
Di xool mbir mi di soppi
As truth prevailed and falsehood fled
Ba dëgg feeñe ba fen réer
And hope restored life to the dead
Ba yaakaar dikkaat ci jaam ñi
Men and Women through him found grace
Jigéen ak góor am nañu yiw
To seek together God’s noble face
Di sàkku kanamu Boroom bi
I envy the cup that gave him drink
Damay kiñaan kaas gu ko nàmpal
His thoughts that helped us all to think
Ak xalaatam yi ñu ubil
To be one thought that passed his mind
Ma bëggoon nekk xalaat
Inspiring him to act so kind
Di ko gëna nax ci tàbbe
For me this world is not one jot
Ci man adduna du dara
If I could simply be a thought
Su fekkenté ne mën naa nekk
From him to God throughout the ages
Jogé ci moom jëm ci Yàlla
As revelation came in stages
Ni waxyu bi doon wàccé
I pity all who think it odd
Damay yëram ñi bëgg a reer
To hear him say there is one God
Ba ñu dégge mu ne Yàlla
Or he was sent by God to men
Walleet ne Yàlla ko yabal
To hone their spirits’ acumen
Ngir taral seeni xel ak seeni xol
It’s pride that blinds us from the sight
Rëy-rëy mooy lëndëmal bët
That helps good men to see his light
Li doon won nit ñu baax yi
He taught us all to be God’s slaves
Jàngal na ñu ñu nekk jaam
And he will be the one who saves
Te moom mooy kiy xettali
Humanity from sinful pride
Ngir fexee musal jaam ñi
Muhammad has God on his side
Muhamat am na ndimbalul
So on this day be blessed and sing
Ci bis bi léen bég te sànt
For he was born to grace our Spring
Ndax juddoom and na ak njël
With lilies, flowers, life’s rebirth
Ak turaay ak tookeréen
In a dome of green like his on earth
Ci biir gubba gu wert ga
